Chickens: The Gateway Drug To Homesteading

Personal

One thing that you MUST know about me: I LOVE CHICKENS! I just adore my chickens and I love to talk about them and show off pictures of them, and videos, and tell funny stories. And yes, I talk to them and wait for them to answer me. I’ll admit it! No shame in my chicken game.

I grew up with all sorts of animals, I was a 4-H kid, and oh my gosh I miss it soooo much I won’t even go to a country fair anymore cause it hurts my heart so much! (On a side note: if you have kids – seriously look into 4-H! It is such an amazing program and opportunity for young ones!)

Once Hubs and I picked up our little plot of land out in the county, it wasn’t long before we ventured to Tractor Supply one spring – during chick days – and I came home with our first six ‘pullets’ which were Rhode Island Reds!

Well, out of those six ‘pullets’ – three turned out to be roosters. And although they were good fellas – we weren’t ready to take on any roos at the moment, so we rehomed them and that left us with our Three OG’s. (Original Girls!)

Of those three, one turned out to be a Golden Comet, our little Golden Girl. And she was the sweetest thing! She was one hundred percent spoiled! She demanded her bits of bread be hand fed to her, she loved her treats of corn and watermelon every day. And oh my goodness, when we would be done fishing for a weekend I would toss our spare nightcrawlers in – and she was in heaven!

Last week however, she passed, and our flock is missing her dearly! This is just a moment to think about her and her quirky personality! We love you Golden Girl!
