If you had checked the forecast leading up to Mackenzie and Dylan’s engagement session, you might have thought we were about to be ice skating instead of taking photos! Freezing rain was in the forecast almost the entire week, and I kept refreshing the weather app like we had a personal issue with each other!
But I have learned one very important point when it comes to photography – don’t worry about the weather until it’s time.
And sure enough — the day arrived, and instead of icy sidewalks and gray skies, we were gifted the loveliest mild afternoon. The kind of day that makes you breathe a little easier!
From the moment I met Mackenzie and Dylan in Louisville, I knew this was going to be one of those sessions. The kind where you show up to take pictures… and end up spending just as much time talking, laughing, and swapping stories as you do actually clicking the shutter.
That first connection matters so much to me. I don’t ever want to feel like I’m just showing up, posing people, and leaving. I want my couples to feel comfortable. Known. Like they can exhale and just be themselves.
We explored a cute little photography studio tucked away in the city and then wandered through the quaint surrounding streets. Brick walls, charming corners — it felt like we had stumbled onto our own little hidden pocket of Louisville.
There were moments when I would lift my camera and then lower it again because we were mid-conversation about something random and wonderful — and that’s exactly how I like it. When the connection is real, the photos follow.
Mackenzie and Dylan reminded me why I love engagement sessions so much. It’s not just about pretty photos for save-the-dates. It’s about building trust before the wedding day. It’s about creating that comfort so when I show up on their wedding morning, I’m not a stranger with a camera — I’m someone who already knows their rhythm! I’m a friend, and not just a vendor!
And if their wedding day is anything like this session?
It’s going to be full of joy, energy, and probably a whole lot of laughter!
